Coimbatore Infrastructure Projects and What They Mean for Property

Infrastructure is the most common reason given for buying in a particular Coimbatore suburb, and also the most commonly exaggerated one. As of September 2026, the Avinashi Road elevated corridor is open, the western ring road is partly built, the airport expansion is under way, and the metro has been rejected by the Centre for a second time. This guide sets out where each project stands and how to factor it into a property decision.

Project status at a glance (September 2026)

Avinashi Road elevated corridor

The four-lane G. D. Naidu Elevated Expressway runs about 10.1 km from Uppilipalayam to Goldwins junction in Peelamedu, bypassing 12 signalised junctions, with ramps at intermediate points. It was inaugurated in October 2025 and is described as the longest elevated corridor in Tamil Nadu.

What it means: quicker through-travel between the city centre and the airport end of Avinashi Road, which helps homes and offices around Peelamedu, Hope College and Chinniyampalayam. Homes right beside ramps may face more noise, so inspect carefully.

Coimbatore Metro

The state’s Phase 1 plan proposed two corridors: Ukkadam to Neelambur along Avinashi Road, and Coimbatore Junction to Valiyampalayam Pirivu along Sathy Road. The Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs returned the Coimbatore and Madurai proposals in 2025. The state said in January 2026 that it would resubmit with more data, but a Swarajya report of 22 July 2026 says the Centre rejected them again, citing the 20 lakh population benchmark in the Metro Rail Policy 2017 and recommending better bus-based transport.

What it means: there is no approved metro. Treat any “metro-facing” premium as speculation.

Western ring road

This is a planned bypass of about 32 km on the city’s west side, meant to keep heavy vehicles out of the centre. Phase 1 covers 11.8 km from Mylkal near Madukkarai to Madampatti through Sundakkamuthur, Perur, Chettipalayam and Theethipalayam; work began in August 2023 at a cost of about ₹250 crore and was reported near completion in late 2025 and early 2026. Phase 2 covers 12.1 km from Madampatti to Somayampalayam via Vadavalli, at an estimated ₹368 crore, and was still awaiting clearance in January 2026.

What it means: better links for Kovaipudur, Perur and Madampatti now, and possibly for Vadavalli later. Check the alignment and access points before paying for “ring road frontage”.

Airport expansion

The Tamil Nadu government funded land acquisition for the expansion and handed the land to the Airports Authority of India on a long lease; AAI took possession of about 470 acres in January 2025. The plan includes extending the runway so larger aircraft can use it. Passenger traffic has grown steadily in recent years according to AAI statistics.

What it means: continued demand for homes, hotels and offices on the eastern side, but also height restrictions and noise near the airport boundary.

Other roads and projects

• L&T bypass (NH 544): the 28 km Neelambur to Madukkarai toll road remains the main route around the city. Widening has been discussed for years; check the latest official status before relying on it.
• Trichy Road flyover: the 3.2 km flyover opened in June 2022.
• Mettupalayam Road: the Goundampalayam and GN Mills flyover has been operational since 2023.
• Semmozhi Poonga: the large botanical park on the former Central Prison site at Gandhipuram opened to the public in December 2025.
• Integrated bus terminus, Vellalore: announced in 2014 with the foundation stone laid in 2020, it has remained incomplete for years.

Planning: Master Plan 2041 and a bigger Corporation

The Coimbatore Master Plan 2041, released in July 2025, covers about 1,531.57 sq km, including the Corporation, four municipalities, 21 panchayats and 66 revenue villages, and plans for a population of around 60 lakh by 2041. Separately, a government order expanded Coimbatore Corporation from about 257 sq km to about 415 sq km, adding areas such as Chinniyampalayam, Neelambur, Keeranatham, Malumichampatti, Vellalore, Perur, Irugur and Madukkarai. Check a plot’s land use zone in the master plan through the local planning office before you buy.

How to use infrastructure news when buying

1. Separate built from proposed. Price in what is open; treat proposals as a possible bonus.
2. Read the date and source of any news, and look for a government order, tender or official announcement.
3. Check the alignment, not just the name of the area. A project a few kilometres away may not help your plot.
4. Consider the downsides: noise, land acquisition, construction disruption and height limits.
